A Cultural Institution for Denim

The Denim Institute and Museum is dedicated to preservation, education, and innovation. As a world-class museum and educational hub, it documents and celebrates denim’s rich history and cultural significance. Through its immersive exhibits and short-course denim school, it empowers students, scholars, industry professionals, and enthusiasts to explore denim’s roots—and shape its future.

The Denim Institute & Museum will be housed in the landmark 1947 Gerry Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as L.A. Historic-Cultural Monument No. 708.

Located at 910 S. Los Angeles St. in the heart of the Fashion District—between the California Market Center and The New Mart—our home sits at the true epicenter of L.A.’s apparel industry, long rooted in garment production and leading showrooms.

The Denim Institute & Museum preserves denim’s history, educates future talent, and inspires innovation through immersive exhibits and hands-on learning.

Preservation

Our museum preserves and celebrates the global story of denim—from its 19th-century workwear roots to its evolution as a symbol of rebellion, style, and identity. Through curated permanent and seasonal exhibitions featuring rare garments and historical ephemera, we preserve the cul- tural and industrial legacy of denim. Visitors experience over 150 years of denim history, presented through the perspectives of brands, pro- duction workers, designers, and the movements that shaped its evolu- tion.

Education

The Denim Institute’s short-course Los Angeles School of Denim deliv- ers immersive, hands-on training for aspiring designers, craftspeople, and industry professionals. Focused on the trade, these short courses bridge historical context with technical skill—covering everything from pattern making and sewing to finishing, sourcing, and business essen- tials. With small class sizes and direct access to industrial machines, ar- tisan mentors, and real-world denim development, we’re creating a new pipeline of skilled, denim-literate talent.

Innovation

We work to push the denim industry forward in collaboration with mills, brands, and technology partners. Our innovation programming sup- ports a circular and sustainable future—focusing on low-impact dyeing, ethical manufacturing, fiber-to-fiber recycling, and transparent supply chains. Through exhibitions, panel talks, product showcases, and R&D partnerships, we serve as a bridge between legacy craftsmanship and the future of responsible denim production.

The museum experience begins in the Legacy Brands Hall, a chronological showcase of denim’s earliest pioneers through the 1990s. From here, guests enter a larger gallery featuring almost 500 global denim brands, celebrating the products and the people who shaped them

Preserving the Legacy of Denim

The Denim Museum is the heart of The Denim Institute, preserving and showcasing denim’s cultural, industrial, and social legacy—from 19th-century workwear to a global symbol of style.

I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity–all I hope for in my clothes.
